About the Foundation & Outdoor Center
The Windham County 4-H Foundation, Inc.
was founded in 1953 when volunteers purchased land for a 4-H
Camp in the Abington section of Pomfret. Through donations of
funds and labor from individuals and businesses throughout the
entire county, these volunteers
were able to build a main lodge,
several cabins and lavatories, so that the first camping season
could begin in August, 1954.
Since that time, additional property
has expanded the camp size, and many additional buildings erected,
which has enabled the summer camp program to grow. During the
fall through spring school term, many nearby schools send their
students to take part in the Ragged Hill Woods Environmental
Education Program, which allows the students to study "hands
on" in an outdoor setting, principally at the Windham County
4-H Outdoor Center.
The all volunteer board meets monthly and holds an annual meeting
in January. Volunteers perform most of the maintenance and management
of the entire facility, employing only 2 full time employees as
caretaker and administrative assistant. Part-time staff is hired
yearly to operate the summer program.
